A visiting of New Zealand Governor-General

Sir Jerry and his wife took a photo with our COPE & CMR team at COPE centre

New Zealand's Governor-General, Lieutenant General The Right Honourable Sir Jerry Mateparae, his wife and delegation have ended their visit to Laos, which took place from August 12-14 at the invitation of President Choummaly Sayasone.

During his visit, Sir Jerry Mateparae and his delegation met with President Choummaly for an official bilateral meeting at the President's Office in Vientiane on August 12. Both sides expressed their satisfaction and valued the friendly relationship and cooperation that has continued over 48 years, and agreed to continue strengthening their ties for their mutual benefit.

Sir Jerry Mateparae and his delegation  also visited Xieng Khuang province where they attended the opening ceremony of the New Zealand-supported exhibition centre for unexploded ordnance (UXO) and tourism information.

Sir Jerry Mateparae and his delegation ended the visiting Laos by visiting the Cooperative Orthotic and Prosthetic Enterprise(COPE) before their return to New Zealand.

Sir Jerry Mateparae and his delegation listened intently to  the tour from Soksai Sengvongkham, COPE Visitor Centre Manager, hearing about the devastating and on-going affects from the US-made and deployed bombs over Laos during the Vietnam War. Sir Jerry asked some questions regarding our COPE services such as what COPE is doing to support cluster munitions survivors and people with physical disabilities in Laos. After the tour he left us some messages on our COPE comment’s book and below  is what he wrote:
“On behalf of my wife and my delegation I congratulate the staff of COPE for the wonderful work you are doing to make peoples’ lives “better”. It is humbling to learn of difference you are making every day”.

We also updated the COPE Laos Facebook page with the latest news coverage from the visit.
