COPE strives to take a team approach to patient care. In all of the five rehabilitation centres throughout Lao PDR, patients are assessed by a team of medical professionals, including local surgeons, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, prosthetists and orthotists. It is at these assessments that important decisions about future treatment are made with the whole team involved.
This whole of team approach is vital for providing patients with the best possible care. Fitting a person with a new prosthesis alone is not enough or in some cases can be counterproductive if patients are not provided with complimentary rehabilitation services, such as those offered by physiotherapy and occupational therapy.
Santar's story is an excellent example of the benefits of taking a team approach to patient services.
