Lungsouliya is a bright and determined 14-year-old girl from Pakkoung Village in Vientiane, Lao PDR. Born with a deformity in her left leg, she grew up facing challenges that could have limited her education and participation in daily life. But her journey shows what becomes possible when inclusion is not an afterthought, but a commitment.
At just seven years old, she received her first ortho-prosthetic device at the Centre for Medical Rehabilitation (CMR), with support from COPE. That device became more than equipment it became her pathway to independence. With it, she can walk confidently, attend school, play with her friends, and support her grandfather with cooking, washing clothes, and caring for animals. Every step she takes reflects her strength and the belief that children with disabilities deserve equal opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive.
As she continues to grow, regular visits about every six months are needed to adjust or replace her device. During her most recent visit in October 2025, she received a new prosthetic to address issues with length and socket fitting, ensuring she can continue moving forward comfortably and confidently.
Lungsouliya’s story embodies the 2025 International Day of Persons with Disabilities theme: “Fostering Disability-Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress.”
Her experience is a powerful reminder that when communities invest in accessible services, assistive technology, and supportive attitudes, children with disabilities are not left behind they rise, they contribute, and they inspire.
This International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we honor stories like hers stories that show us that inclusion is not just meaningful, it is transformational. By removing barriers and expanding opportunities, we build a society where everyone’s abilities are recognized, valued, and celebrated.
